Occasionally we have people with an overflow of possessions that they do not want to let go of at the time, so store with us until they decide what to do.
Some people store with use for a few days, some months and yet others, years. Our storage facilities offer the opportunity to store your possessions safely until they are required. If you are using us for the removal service it means you only have one company to negotiate with, which makes it much easier.
If you wish to use our storage facilities, you will need to make sure they are the right service for you. We are not a self-storage facility. Self storgae facilities offer the opportunity for you to visit and remove things as you wish. Our facility is in a secure premises with no access to the public. It is designed as part of the home or commercial removal service where it needs storage until it is moved to the new premises.
This means it is important to make sure you do not store anything that you need to get access to before you leave the storage facility. Keep Important paperwork, passports, and any other documents you may need, with you, not in storage.
In storage we will take the same care of your possessions as we do with our removal service. We use specialist covers for furniture and pack possessions using wrapping and double walled boxes. We do ask that if you are not using our packing service that you use the correct packaging materials (see the blog on packing, for details). You must use the double walled boxes and not supermarket ones, and certainly not bin liners. The double lined boxes are strong enough to protect your belongs, especially if you have wrapped breakables with enough packing materials. Single walled are problematic as they aren’t strong enough. It can be difficult enough with a day move, but the strain over time, in storage will risk the contents. Even worse are bin liners. They offer virtually no protection and rip easily.
It is always important to label boxes with the type of content and the eventual room it is intended for – kitchen, master bedroom etc. If we are packing, we will ensure to do this. If you are packing, do make sure to remember to label everything. This makes it so much easier to ensure a smooth move to your new home and voids you having to open boxes before we know which room to take them.
It is important to make sure you are only storing appropriate items. As mentioned above, don’t store things you will need access to before you leave storage. But you must also make sure you do not store any kind of food and perishables at all. This includes dried or tinned. Valuables such as jewellery should also not be kept in storage. If you have any items that are fragile through age, use, or material, make sure you discuss this with Albany Removals beforehand, so we can work out the best course of action.
Also, consider the condition of the furniture you are storing. We wrap furnishings in plastic for protection, but if there is any damp in the furniture when it goes into storage, it could turn to mold or mildew over time. As far as possible, if you intend to store furniture over a protracted period, make sure it is dry. Fabric headboards and mattresses can be particularly problematic due to human sweat. Albany Removals cannot take responsibility for items that are likely to deteriorate overtime in storage, due to their general condition at the time of storage.
To reduce customers expense I would suggest you think very carefully about what you really want to store, especially if you intend to use storage for long periods of time. Make sure you really want to keep whatever it is you are storing. It is easy to just pack everything without thinking, but that will increase the space you need and the cost. To reduce costs, sell, donate, or dispose of items you no longer require, or won’t fit in your new home.
