Planning a Move

Albany Removals and Storage has been in business since 1987, offering local and nationwide removals. They have decades of advice to offer readers planning a move.
Whether you have a small or large move; require packing, or want to do that yourself; are move locally or across country, Pete from Albany Removals says it’s important to get advice; ‘it’s not like packing for a trip, you’re moving the entire contents of one home and transporting to another.’ If you y
Look in the Documents folder, on the website, you will find a copy of our Hints and Tips leaflet which contains some of the most important considerations.
Packing

Albany offers a packing and dismantling/reassembly service. This takes the time and pressure of you at a busy time. If you prefer to do your own packing there are some important things to consider before you start. The key is using the right packaging; ‘double layered boxes, designed for removals, which protect your possessions.’ Albany can supply these.
Pete advises don’t use supermarket boxes. ‘They have a high risk of collapsing when used for removals. Boxes are stacked in the lorry, so packaging must be strong enough for the content and weight of other boxes. To avoid injury, don’t over fill with heavy content either.
Pete’s other advice is don’t use carrier bags or bin liners. ‘These are all perfect for their intended purpose, but that isn’t removals. They split easily and are difficult to stack. Open bags leave content open to the elements too’.
For clothes Pete suggests wardrobe boxes. ‘Simply take hanging clothes from your wardrobe and hang in the boxes.’ Albany can provide wardrobe boxes.
Albany can also dismantle and reassemble your large items, such as wardrobes and beds. If you are doing this yourself, be advised to keep all screw and small fittings together in a labelled bag, taped to the furniture they come from. It is also worth taking pictures as you dismantle it. It may seem straightforward when you are taking it apart, but it probably won’t feel like that when you try putting it back together. Strapping pieces together and/or labelling them can be really helpful too. If you have furniture sets, or pieces that look similar, this is very important , or time can be wasted trying to sort the pieces.
Boxes should also be labelled. People rarely have time to unpack everything at once. So, keeping things that you will need over the short term, all together, can save you having to hunt through loads of boxes.
Valuables, including jewellery and laptops should be stored and transported yourself. Also ensure you have access to important paperwork you may need during the move. Once boxes are packed and loaded, which takes a lot of time, it is a time-consuming effort to unload and sort through boxes to find essentials, especially if the boxes aren’t labelled.
Make sure everything is packed and ready the day before the move. There is not enough time to pack and move on the same day. Having everything ready helps for a stress free, smooth move. If you are not sure you will have the time to do this, let Albany Removals do it for you.
If you have any special requirements or questions, don’t hesitate to contact Pete at Albany Removals. He has decades of experiences arranging and undertaking moves both local in the Nottinghamshire area and across country as far as northern Scotland and the far edge of Cornwall.
