Rainy Day Moves

Latest News

Everyone is wondering what has happened to our summer. This week’s temperatures are more like April than June. Along with the colder weather, we, in Nottingham, seem to have been experiencing a lot more rainy days. As a removal company we appreciate the cooler temperatures as removals are physically demanding, however, rain needs a bit more consideration.

It doesn’t matter if it is a short move between West Bridgford and Ruddington, into our storage unit or a longer move from Radcliffe to Cornwall, it is the loading and unloading that needs the extra care on rainy days.

At Albany we do ensure that furniture, including mattresses are covered as part of the moving process.

Ensure power tools, especially those that don’t fit in conventional boxes, are well wrapped in waterproof covering. Water in electrical products can be dangerous as well as damaging
.
Boxes may need to be covered to protect them as they move from the house to the van, though correct packing materials (see previous blogs), moved swiftly, should be fine. It is worth remembering, if you have done your own packing, that labels need to be waterproofed. Write directly onto the boxes with a permanent marker to avoid labels coming off and letters running in the damp. This is especially important if you are placing things in sheds or outhouses in your new property. You may not know the level of waterproofing in these buildings until you have lived there for a while.

Protect floors from the rain and mud. We use carpet and stair covers as a matter of course. These are essential on rainy days to protect carpets as our colleagues are carrying things to and from the vans to the property. Properties in the small, rural villages in the Rushcliffe area, can sometimes have more natural habitat and pathways which need negotiating during loading; extra preparation to avoid mud being trampled may need considering.

Keeping a mop at hand is useful for hard flooring as wet patches pose a slipping hazard. It is easy to build up water patches on a wet day. An alternative is to use unfolded boxes on the floor.

The aim of the move is to ensure belongings are moved from the house to the van, and the van into your new house as quickly as possible to avoid getting too wet. Albany Removals will know the layout of your house and will do a review again on the morning of your move. To ensure the unpacking of the van, at the other end, is also completed quickly, it is essential to ensure all boxes are labelled. You will also need a plan as to where they all need to go. You do not want to be standing outside deciding, or piling everything in one room to move later, in order to get out of the rain. If our colleagues know where everything needs to go, they can get the job done quickly and efficiently, so you do not need to be searching and moving boxes unnecessarily.

If the rain is torrential, we will take a pause in the loading and unloading. There are things Albany Removals colleagues can be getting on with, such as moving boxes and furniture downstairs ready for a break in the weather, or assembling furniture, to help keep the move running.
If you are moving into Albany Removals storage unit we will wait for a pause in heavy rain before we move your belongings in.
