When you receive your quote for a removal, it will provide a breakdown of different parts of the removal process. There will be details of the cost of packing materials, packing, dismantling and reassembling, removal and cost of key waiting time.
If you are happy with your quote and have a firm date for your move from your solicitor, you can book your job. Different removal companies have different processes for booking, deposit and balance payments. The different procedures to secure your booking and moving date include:
•	Paying a non-refundable deposit with a balance on the day of the move
•	Book and pay, in full before the move
•	Pay all on the day
Most established removal companies will use either the first or second option, as a cancelled booking is an expensive loss for a company, when they will have turned away other bookings and still have employees and overheads to pay. It is also an organisational nightmare if clients are constantly changing dates. It is therefore important that you get a firm commitment from your solicitor and those in your chain, for the moving day before booking.
At Albany we require a £200, non-refundable deposit for a full day’s work. This will secure the required lorry and colleagues for your move as well as packing services if booked. During busy periods this is essential. We have had people phoning round, desperate for a removal service with less than a week’s notice.
We don’t, at Albany, ask for the full payment in advance. We are aware that there are some occasions when things go wrong at the last minute, through no fault of our clients. This doesn’t happen very often, but in these circumstances, we don’t want to add to our client’s distress, at a difficult time, by adding a larger financial burden, through the loss of that days booking costs and the need to pay, in full, for another day.
Paying a deposit can bring peace of mind, knowing the job is secured for that day. Though most removal companies are trustworthy and have their clients’ best interests at heart, there are some unscrupulous companies. If you have booked but not paid a deposit some companies will cancel your booking at the last minute if they are offered a better paid job. Make sure you check out the reviews for removal companies before booking.
When accepting a quote, make sure you have fully considered the options available, especially with regard to packing and dismantling. Many clients will decide to do their own packing etc. to save money. If you are going to do this, make sure you do not underestimate the time this will take. It is not unusually for use to get requests to pack at the last minute, but there is no guarantee we will have colleagues available for this at short notice, so be realistic, consider the requirements and plan.
It is also extremely important to read the Hints and Tips for packing on our website, in the Latest News section. Poor quality boxes and packing materials can lead to damaged goods and add additional costs when it slows down the removal process. We can supply appropriate packing materials at a reasonable cost if required (remember no supermarket food boxes, they aren’t strong enough).
Finally, if you decide to dismantle any furniture yourself, you will also need to reassemble it yourself. This is because our expert team needs to be able to see how the assembled product looks and is made up, to reassemble, otherwise it will take a lot longer, therefore not saving money in the long run. Bear in mind that you need to keep parts together, bolts, screws etc. in bags and all labelled.
