The Importance of Labelling Boxes

Smooth and problem free move between properties in West Bridgford. The clients had followed the guidance from the Hints and Tips leaflet, helping the whole day work without a hitch.

When we arrived, a space had been reserved for the lorry. This can save the time and frustration of knocking on neighbours’ doors at 8am, asking them to move, or the problem of blocking neighbours in.

It is important that we get as close to the property as possible. Not only does it reduce wasted time, but it also avoids boxes being exposed to the elements, which is important if it is raining. It also helps our colleagues when carrying especially heavy or awkward belongings. With some properties access is inevitably going to be difficult, but we can factor that in when planning and quoting a move.

During this move we had supplied the clients with suitable boxes and packing materials, as they had opted to completed their own packing. All their boxes were labelled to show what room they should be placed in, at the other end. This means we can load and unload quickly and efficiently.

There have been moves, in the past, where unloading has been severely delayed whilst clients work out what each box contains and where they want to put them. It also means the clients need to be be on-hand, at all times, during the unloading trying to decide which box goes where. A simple label placed on the box as it is taped up means a client can leave the unloading to us and use their time to get on with other things, or just take a break.

Labelling boxes also means clients can find items they need, over the coming days, as they know which box to look in and unpack first. I'm sure today's clients will be settled into their new home in no time.


This move also saw the completion and release of keys just after mid-day. There has been a reoccurring problem with keys being released late in the afternoon, about 4 or 5 pm, over the last couple of years. This can make for a very long day, which is made longer if the boxes are not labelled.

Remember if you are packing yourself, use strong boxes designed for your precious belongings, not supermarket boxes aimed at storing lighter and less precious belongings. Avoid Don’t using bin liners. Even the stronger ones can rip, they don’t protect the content and they are extremely difficult to stack safely in our lorries. Remember what the real purpose of bin-liners are.

Also remember that as fit and strong as our team at Albany is, we do need to lift safely – don’t over pack heavy items, like books, all together in one large box. Thank you to today's clients who considered all of these factors.

A final word - no need to worry about large items like sofas; we use specialist covers and cover larger furniture, carpet and stairs to limit the possibility of damage and staining.
