Unwanted Furniture

Latest News

When you are moving to a new home you may not always need or want to take all your furnishings with you. To save on removal costs it is a good idea to plan what you will need and what you won’t. If you need to get rid of furniture you should arrange this well before you are moving, it is not easy to achieve at the last minute.

Why might you not want to bring all your furnishings?

The furniture won’t fit. Check your furniture will fit your new home? Will it get through the doors and round any corners? Will it fit well in the intended room? If you are downsizing or moving to a house that has different size and shaped rooms, you should take measurements before you move. Creating a floor plan will help you visualise the layout and help you to look for the appropriate sizes when purchasing new furnishings.

You have more furniture than will fit in your new house.

You plan to replace older furniture or just fancy a change.

What are my options?
If you know you need to get rid of furniture when you are arranging your quote and removal with Albany Removals, we can advise you as to whether we can do this for you.
Older and broken furniture
If older furniture needs disposing of, we can take it to a commercial tip. Commercial businesses are not permitted to use the council recycling centres, so a cost will be incurred. If the furnishing fit in a car, or can be broken down to fit, you can dispose of it, free, at your local tip. You will have to register your car with your local council, online, before you arrive, if you haven’t done so previously.

If your furniture is in good condition

Ask your buyers if they would like to add any furniture to the sale of the house. This may be especially useful for first time buyers. Arrange this early, so it can be added to the list of items included in the sale. If you just leave unwanted furniture without agreement you could be in breach of contract.

You could sell via an online market such as Facebook Market Place, Gumtree or ebay. This will help raise some cash towards any replacements. For local sales, Albany Removals may be able to deliver furniture to a purchaser as part of the move.

Donate to a charity. Charities such as Sue Ryder. They have a furniture collection service. They have shops in Clifton and Beeston and across Nottingham. The furniture must be suitable to be sold in their charity shops. For sofas they must have labels showing they meet current fire safety standards, this should apply to all modern furnishings. Details can be found online or visiting your local shop.

Antique or vintage furniture may be suitable for sale at auctions such as Arthur Johnson’s in Nottingham. You should do a bit of research to check the suitability as you do have to pay to place items in an auction. Check what is currently selling from previous auctions.

As always, Albany Removals is happy to help and advise on any issue related to your move including unwanted furniture. Either ask during quoting or contact Pete at Albany Removals via text all call on 07970 383207.
